In this episode Malcolm and Daren discuss the concept of Security as a principle of network design.  The original idea for this discussion came from a series of blog posts, and now we give them the Network Freestyle treatment!  As you put together a design for a network, what do you need to ensure that you address to provide an appropriate degree of security of the environment? How do you ensure you keep the bad guys away from your network crown jewels?

In this episode Malcolm and Daren discuss data centre design, covering the key building blocks required to deliver a modular and scalable solution.

The design topics covered throughout the discussion include the trusted, semi-trusted and untrusted zones of the data centre, design drivers and some scenarios relating to traffic flows to / from applications and services from the WAN and internet.

Consequences of stateful devices in the failover path are also covered with some suggestions on how issues can be alleviated to avoid application outages.

In this episode Malcolm and Daren discuss the concept of Scalability as a principle of network design.  The original idea for this discussion came from a series of blog posts, and now we give them the Network Freestyle treatment!  Once you have built a network, you want to make sure it grows and scales with the business it underpins.  And so, as a network designer, what can we do to ensure we have the right scale?

In this episode Malcolm and Daren discuss the concept of Availability as a principle of network design.  The original idea for this discussion came from a series of blog posts, and now we give the first of them the Network Freestyle treatment!  The whole point of having a network is to ensure that networked services are available to the business - making availability the money maker!  And so, as a network designer, what can we do to keep the lights on?

In this episode Malcolm and Daren discuss the design principles, building blocks and behaviour of Cisco's SD-WAN product.  Formerly Viptela, Cisco acquired the product in mid 2017 in order to develop their software-defined networking capabilities.

Cisco SD-WAN is a fully-featured integrated software-defined networking product, which uses many concepts which will be familiar to the viewer, and others that are less so.  We bring the practical experience of designing such networks to the video and discuss some of the pitfalls and gotchas experienced along the way.

In this episode Malcolm and Daren discuss the design principles, building blocks and behaviour of Cisco Intelligent WAN which was one of the first SD-WAN solutions to enter the market place.

IWAN is built on a foundation of several different well established network protocols inherent within Cisco routing platforms such as the ASR1k, CSRv1K and ISR 4k which are combined to deliver the IWAN solution.

Some terms and protocols which are covered include the following; Underlays, Overlays, Master Controller, Border Router, PFRv2, PFRv3, iBGP, eBGP, EIGRP with details and operational examples drawn on the whiteboard, along with working through a PFRv3 configuration and it's operation.
