Published: 24th January 2019

Hosts: Malcolm BoodenDaren Fulwell

In this episode Malcolm and Daren discuss the design principles, building blocks and behaviour of Cisco's SD-WAN product.  Formerly Viptela, Cisco acquired the product in mid 2017 in order to develop their software-defined networking capabilities.

Cisco SD-WAN is a fully-featured integrated software-defined networking product, which uses many concepts which will be familiar to the viewer, and others that are less so.  We bring the practical experience of designing such networks to the video and discuss some of the pitfalls and gotchas experienced along the way.

In this episode Malcolm and Daren discuss the design principles, building blocks and behaviour of Cisco Intelligent WAN which was one of the first SD-WAN solutions to enter the market place.

IWAN is built on a foundation of several different well established network protocols inherent within Cisco routing platforms such as the ASR1k, CSRv1K and ISR 4k which are combined to deliver the IWAN solution.

Some terms and protocols which are covered include the following; Underlays, Overlays, Master Controller, Border Router, PFRv2, PFRv3, iBGP, eBGP, EIGRP with details and operational examples drawn on the whiteboard, along with working through a PFRv3 configuration and it's operation.

In this introduction, Malcolm and Daren describe what it is to be a Network Freestyler.  If you are the sort of person who can take a network design topic or technology and relate it to a customer or colleague in a conversational, freeform style, with the use of a whiteboard where one is available, then you are a Network Freestyler.

Our intention is to publish a series of videos recorded in this style to provide a perspective on a number of network design topics, using real-life experience and design scenarios.  In this episode, you find out more about us as individuals and hopefully come away with a sense of our style and what we are trying to achieve in all this!  And you'll spot the obvious deliberate error almost straight away, which shows that we're making this up as we go!

Any comments, correcti…
